Their Version of Self-Defense

A Poem

We occupy a land not ours and build our government there.
We create a flag and imprison the innocent men,
Women,
children,
and whoever realizes our plan
and dares
to defend what’s rightfully theirs,
because for their rights, we don’t care.
Then it becomes public, that this is now our state.
We silence the people of the country,
and claim this was our original homeland.
We say they are the ones who invaded it,
and decided to stay.

Other countries don’t want us in their territory,
they want to have us somewhere far away.
So, they quickly agree to our colonization plan,
Great! This is officially, now, our state!

It’s been about 75 years of us creatively oppressing the people of this land.
but who’s counting?
You’re not,
and neither we are.
We commit atrocious crimes,
but who cares? As long as we’re not bothering other counties’ peace.
And we keep silencing the innocent’s cries.
It’s been about 75 years of us creatively oppressing the people of this land.
Yet they still stand tall with their faith firmly held between their hands.

Now, we are defending ourselves.
Against a small group of people resisting.
Resisting our ongoing slaughter of their people and land.
We bomb dense areas,
Where children and women reside.
We kill innocent people and destroy their lives.
We target ambulance cars and hospitals where the injured and sick take refuge.
We rain down bombs from the sky, to eradicate the people of this country.
So, we can proudly look at the west and wipe our tears,
Celebrate the deaths of the innocents and ‘our land’ that we ‘set free.’
Justifying our actions, since we’re merely protecting it from ‘terrorists’ and ‘savages’ who deserved to die brutally.

We are defending ourselves.

From the people we are occupying
From unarmed elders,
Children,
Mothers,
Fathers,
Sisters,
brothers,
nephews
and grand-daughters
From people with no shelter, food, or water.
From people with no internet nor electricity.

We are defending ourselves.

From journalists keeping the world updated.
From people under the of age twenty-five.
From doctors and nurses saving the lives of people.
From pregnant mothers and their infants.

We are defending ourselves.

From people asking for their rights to be restored.
From people unhappy with our occupation of their country.
From people detained in our concentration camps.
From people we wronged, tortured and ruined.

We are defending ourselves.

From the original inhabitants of this land.
From people trying to protect what’s rightfully theirs
and themselves.

We are defending ourselves.

All our actions- as barbaric as they can get-
are in the name of self-defense.
And that’s what we will force you to accept,
as the reality of the situation,
and please ignore the rest.
