Unknown ocean
I’ve been in the middle of the ocean for I don’t know how long. The weather is freezing, and the rain is falling heavily. The waves are like hungry hyenas. The ship is unstable, and I’m tired of trying to hold it in place. The ocean keeps throwing at me boxes, plastic bags, and a lot more of the things that occupies it, which makes everything even harder. I’m beginning to lose hope of finding a sanctuary. There are no stars and no moon. All I see is pitch black.
Suddenly, after a while of fighting the darkness, I saw light flashing. Light. Finally. Immense hope filled me; and a new sense of determination charged me to put my exhaustion aside and head to the source of light, the lighthouse. I followed the light till I was in some island’s harbor. Finally, finally I could rest and take a breath. I got out of my ship and went to observe the lighthouse. It was strong and sturdy. I couldn’t help but admire how it stood there, unflinching, and confident in the midst this terrible weather. It did its job to help others like me, lost and tired, even with harsh conditions surrounding it. I sighed and inhaled the salty air and stepped inside the island. Time for a new adventure.
-The journal of a sailor
Life is like a big, deep ocean. It throws unexpected things at you and takes you to places you never thought you’d go to. Everything is constantly changing, and you cannot guarantee anything 100%. If life is like the ocean, then you would expect us as humans to be the sailors but that’s not always the case. While most people are like the sailors in that ocean. Others are like the lighthouse or strive to be like it. And you will soon find out why and how you can be like one!
As you might know a lighthouse is very important in a mariner’s life. Sailors spend most their lives in the sea, and sometimes they will need a guide, a navigation aid, they’ll need something to warn them about the dangerous ahead. And that is exactly what a lighthouse is for. It is strong, well-built, and solid. It does not collapse with every strong wave that hits it. And if it is well preserved it doesn’t fall during hurricanes either. Imagine the sea without lighthouses, everyone will be lost, people wouldn’t be able to reach their destination.
The same thing goes with life, imagine life without guidance. Life without someone to help and encourage you, to give you hope and put you on track again.
To be like a lighthouse you must acquire traits like resilience and strength. You have to be able to act like the flashing of the light in the midst of the darkness. To be able to hold on your beliefs even when everyone around you can’t. You should be the symbol of hope and safety to those around you. Just because you can’t see who is benefiting from your light doesn’t mean that there aren’t any people who are.
“Don’t forget that maybe you are the lighthouse in someone else’s storm.”
A person, though, can’t always be a lighthouse, and when you don’t feel like you can be one, you must make sure you find the right one for you. One to guide you, to help you achieve your goal, go to destination, and light your path. So, on the days you feel like giving up, or you’re tired, overwhelmed even, you can have something to motivate you to continue and guide you in the darkness.
Be a source of light to those around you in the dark, be their lighthouse. And if you can’t, then at least find a proper one to follow, never be sailor without one, or you might end up caught or lost in the sea during one of the storms. “Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem…”
